Masters of Content: Rhymesayers Entertainment

2010 January 27

I get this tweet from one of my good friends:

@Spiderjuice45 Hips Me to The Stimulus Package

Instantly, my life has been changed. The momentum for this blog build a little more. It is packaging like you see in the video below that fortifies my belief that artists need to make collectable goods. It only took 15 seconds for me to find my wallet and make a pre-sale purchase. I am a fan of Jake One and I dig some Freeway stuff, but if not for the creative shelf-worthy packaging, I would have passed or waited for a friend to send me a CD rip of Stimulus Package.

Now none of this would not be happening if not for forward-thinking independent labels like Rhymesayers Entertainment were not on the job. This particular packaging was designed by Brent Rollins, who has been deemed by Jeff Chang to be the best graphic designer in the hip hop space for the past decade. Rhymesayers fans may remember the unique packaging for Atmosphere’s last album When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold.
Mind you, both Atmosphere and Freeway have seen success on a career level, so they can afford to put that kind of money into their projects. It is probably going to be a stretch to see a lot of the smaller acts having packaging as lavish as Stimulus Package, but that does not mean you should be lazy on your physical goods you plan to sell.

Make sure cop that pre-sale at Fifth Element Online or Amazon (affiliate link – I make money if you use this) for Stimulus Package.

This is great packaging. Props to them for having the financial planning to invest money into the CD design.

Thanks for the comment, Hedz84. My question is, can it get any better?! I’m amazed by the creativity.

It’s cool how in this “digitally driven” indie music arena that collectible goods is now growing. Creative marketing is all about shifts. Since more indie musicians don’t have the capital to mass produce cd’s with cool packaging, its a great move by established artists or artists with bigger budgets. Creating collectible packages doesn’t have to be an expensive process, just has to be creative. Nice article.

Hey Mario, thanks for stopping by! I will say that you won’t find a lot of artists that will be able to swing such lavish packaging. I imagine in Rhymesayers really giving themselves a chance by releasing a project by a former major label artist it makes sense that they try to buy attention to it. You can see by the internet going nuts that they accomplished that feat.

Artists do need to be as creative though if they want to be able to really stand out in a market where everyone has stuff to sell. Merchandise, being a key income generator, should be something that is not taken lightly. Folks need to see the successes of creative outfits and how they benefit from that.

That’s beautiful, Brent Rollins killed the design per usual.
