Some things of note regarding The Like’s new album, Release Me: it was recorded live, to tape, via strictly analog gear, with producers Alex Greenwald (formerly of Phantom Planet), the Dap-Kings’ Tommy Brenneck, Homer Steinweiss, and Victor Axelrod, and some guy named Mark Ronson. Oh wait, we know that dude. He’s pretty good! As those facts and the above photo imply, first listen “Fair Game” sounds pretty retro, all headspinning organ touches and bustling drums. Release Me arrives in full on June 15.
I just saw the incomparable Sharon Jones live in Detroit this week. Her energy is awe-inspiring. She has one of the tightest bands in the land. To say it simply, she cannot be stopped. At the show where I saw recently, her performance uniform entailed a black and gold cape attached to an all-black dress and the cape made sense, because she is truly superhuman. With the voice of a goddess and showmanship of a Las Vegas legend, Sharon Jones is one of a kind. If you never do anything else before you transfer to another existence, be sure to see Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings live in concert.
On today’s Funky Friday, we are definitely putting the FUNK into it. Be sure you get the latest album I Learned the Hard Way available now (Amazon affiliate link). Make sure the next time Ms. Jones and her band are in your town that you go see them. I promise you will not be disappointed.
